So there are 3 sections and 4 of us. I can do 15.2 all the way up until "Written Tradition." Could the next person do from 15.2 "Written Tradition" until 15.3 "Drumming." The next person could do from 15.3 "Drumming" until 15.4 "Masks." The final person could do from 15.4 "Masks" until the end of the chapter (not including the chapter summary). I'm going to start the first park so you can chose which part you want to do.

15.2 West African Oral and Written Traditions:
o Griots: Record Keepers of the People:
· “a verbal artist of the Mande people”
· “poet-musicians”
· tell stories, sing songs of praise, & recite poems
· perform dance, music, & drama
· educate audiences w/ history accounts & genealogies (“histories of people’s ancestry”)
· every village had its own groit
· memorized important events
· could recite: births, deaths, marriages, battles, hunts, and coronations of kings
· passed from griot to griot
· rulers relied on them as trusted advisors
· most cherished griot history is the story of Sundjata Keita
· art of the griots is still alive today
· “some of the most famous stars in West African popular music are griots”
o Folktales:
· used to pass along history and teach morals & values
· “brought to the Americas by West Africans who were sold into slavery”
· “trickster” tales tell of clever animals or humans who outsmart others
· popular in many cultures
o Proverbs:
· popular sayings
· use images from everyday life to give advice or express ideas
· tell a great deal about wisdom & values of West Africans
· one shows the value that Africans place on stories: “A good story is like a garden carried in the pocket.”
· one shows importance of oral tradition: “Every time an old man dies, it is as if a library has burnt down.”
